CASSAVA: All cassava products have export potentials ranging from the simplest that is garri, to the most complex; modified starches and Biodegradable plastics. Garri is well consumed in North African countries e.g. from Chad, Niger upwards whereas their deserts land cannot sustain the cultivation of cassava. Massive production can be targeted towards these countries. Also, garri is in high demand as ethnic food in the U.S.A and Europe by the African / Caribbean races resident there. However, the most important export products are cassava chips and pellets that are targeted at the animal husbandry sector in all the countries of Europe, U.S.A, and Asia. In 2000,over 10 million meteric tones of cassava chips /pellets were consumed as animal feed in Europe. For instance, in Germany 10-40 percent of cassava is allowed in compound feeding stuff for pigs, 20-25 per cent for poultry while in Netherlands and Belgium the figure are much lower. Presently the poor price for these products is an inhibition for exporters as the competing countries produces at a lower cost than Nigeria. It may be profitable for a direct farmer to process into chips/pellets for exports. European countries also import starch from developing countries used for cloth sizing, cloth finishing and printing as well as in the production of adhesives. Several of these cassava products can also be targeted towards the west coast especially Japan and China. If well planned, cassava exports alone may bring annual foreign exchange than petroleum resources. CASHEW NUT: Its English name derives from the Portuguese name for the fruit of the cashew tree, caju, which in turn derives from the indigenous Tupi name, acaju. It is now widely grown in tropical climates for its cashew nuts (see below) and cashew apples. t is a small evergreen tree growing to 10 to 12m (32 ft) tall, with a short, often irregularlyshaped trunk. The leaves are spirally arranged, leathery textured, elliptic to obovate, 4 to 22 cm long and 2 to 15 cm broad, with a smooth margin. The flowers are produced in a panicle or corymb up to 26 cm long, each flower small, pale green at first then turning reddish, with five slender, acute petals 7 to 15 mm long. What appears to be the fruit of the cashew tree is an oval or pear-shaped accessory fruit or false fruit that develops from the receptacle of the cashew flower. Called the cashew apple, better known in Central America as maranon, it ripens into a yellow and or red structure about 5 to 11 cm long. It is edible, and has a strong sweet smell and a sweet taste. The pulp of the cashew apple is very juicy, and the skin is fragile, thus making it unsuitable for transport. MELON SEED: Melon seed (Egusi) is a very sepcial agricultural products, it comes in only one size and it is in a shell, when open it is white in colour, it can be used for many purposes, like for cooking soups, extracting the oil base inside the seeds, also it can be crused and usedd for live feed stock. SPLIT GINGER DRIED: Ginger, the underground stem, or rhizome, of the plant Zingiber officinale has been used as a medicine in Asian, Indian, and Arabic herbal traditions since ancient times. In China, for example, ginger has been used to aid digestion and treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea for more than 2,000 years. Since ancient times, ginger has also been used to help treat arthritis, colic, diarrhea, and heart conditions. In addition to these medicinal uses, ginger continues to be valued around the world as an important cooking spice and is believed to help the common cold, flu-like symptoms, headaches, and even painful menstrual periods. Native to Asia where its use as a culinary spice spans at least 4,400 years, ginger grows in fertile, moist, tropical soil. Ginger is a knotted, thick, beige underground stem (rhizome). The stem extends roughly 12 inches above ground with long, narrow, ribbed, green leaves, and white or yellowish-green flowers. YAM FLOUR: Nigeria is the world's largest producers of yams with over six million metric tones per annum of this output; only about 5% is put into the industrial use by way chips and flour, Almost all the states in Nigeria grow yams. The raw materials needed are wet yam tubers. These are obtainable from farms cultivated by plantations, small holders and co-operative farmers. There is abundant yam grown in this country. Yam flour is a cherished delicacy among Africans and other parts of the world. its processing increases its shelf life, adds value to the tuber (from where it is processed) before being exported to enhance its economic value, reduces waste and cuts down the cost of transporting the product to longer distances compared with the heavy wet tubers that are unprocessed. The fact that this can be preserved helps to stabilize prices during off harvest season. PEANUTS; peanut is a tender annual belonging to the pea family. It grows 6 inches to 2 feet tall, depending on type. The bunch type grows upright; the runner type spreads out over the ground. Small clusters of yellow, sweet pea-like flowers grow on stems called pegs. The pegs grow down and push into the soil, and the nuts develop 1 to 3 inches under ground from the pegs. PALM OIL: The oil palm (elaeis guineensis) is a multi beneficial tree used in the production of palm oil , palm kernel, oil palm wine bottling, alcohol and yeast production as well as brooms, baskets coupled with various industrial uses which makes it one of the most profitable and less risky of all agricultural products. The tree starts bearing fruits in the fourth year and can be harvested for over 50 years. It yields about 12 bunches of fruits per year with each bunch weighing about 16kg. About 50-75 percent is the fruit the rest being stem. Maximum yield comes in the 9th 12th year varying from about 600kg to 900kg of bunches per hectare. The composition is 66 percent fruit to each bunch and about 20percent oil to each fruit.
